What are NFTs and How Do They Work?
The OCEANS project is one of the main projects that we are supporting, through which we are playing our part in protecting our shared resources and making the world a better place. It is a potent marine protection platform that we are rightly proud of. The team onboard the SV OCEANS sailing yacht is sailing around the world, doing scuba diving, exploration and marine conservation projects. The OCEANS Project is also conducting interviews with marine scientists and helping to teach people what can be done to protect our Oceans.

SV OCEANS is a Jeanneau Sun Odyssea 42.2 sailing yacht with a sloop design. It has berths for 8 persons, and is equipped with the latest Raymarine navigation electronics with Navionics charts. It employs the IridiumGo! Satellite system. It has 8 scuba diving tanks onboard. It is also equipped with 1600W solar panels and a 10KWh LiFePo4 battery bank. It is fully equipped with life jackets and tethers onboard, and a 6 person offshore life raft with ISO 9650-1, Group A certification.
SV OCEANS underwent a major overhaul in the last 3 years and is geared towards safe and convenient offshore and (very) remote sailing, exploration and scuba diving.

Spring 2022 through to Winter 2023, crossing from the Americas to French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga, Western Samoa, Tokelau Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribat, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Palau, Fiji, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands

What is the team onboard SV OCEANS doing?
Marine life is highly vulnerable to human influences such as overfishing, and pollution. The passionate team onboard SV OCEANS is doing a 3 year circumnavigation with this sailing vessel, filming and documenting wildlife and marine protection projects all around the globe.
The main goals are:
1- Reversing the decline of the coral reefs,
2- Putting an end to shark finning by:
implementing marine sanctuaries,
raising public awareness and
educating local fishing communities and diving centres on the solutions that are available today.
How can we protect the sharks?
Without sharks, most tropical ecosystems are doomed. It’s vital that sharks are being protected, because they keep check on the fish populations. The OCEANS project team advocates shark feeding and shark dives to introduce the public to these amazing creatures and their environment. This will allow more people to understand sharks and their extremely important role within their ecosystems. As a result, more support can be mobilized for shark protection programs around the globe.
Reef sanctuaries also help to protect sharks. These are no-fish zones that can be introduced in overfished areas, to allow the fish populations to grow back quickly.
Local dive centers can work together with local fishing communities, by introducing a fee for every tourist diving in the sanctuary. The proceeds go straight to the fishermen and the community, who will in turn protect the sanctuaries. As a result, after just two years there will be an increase in fish populations that the fish will expand their territories beyond the sanctuaries. This is where the fishermen can fish, without having any negative impact on the environment.
Protecting the hatcheries within the reef sanctuaries is key to the success.
How can we restore the coral reefs?
Corals are under stress because of rising sea temperatures due to climate change. The increasing intensity and frequency of hurricanes and cyclones that batter the tropical reefs don’t allow the reefs to to recover from these weather phenomena.
The OCEANS project team is working with experts in the field of coral reef monitoring, coral husbandry and coral reef restoration to reverse these effects.
Scientists are growing more resilient corals, which can be planted on a larger scale on dying reefs. This helps to restore the balance of the reef and the health of the ecosystems within.
